In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. (NIV)
Nature and Purpose of the Deacon Body
The deacon body is a service organization for Gambrell Street Baptist Church. It is not an administrative body. The deacons are nominated by the membership of the church. The main responsibilities of the deacon include ministering to families, serving as deacon of the week, assisting in offering collection, distributing the elements of the Lord’s Supper, and sponsoring special deacon activities e.g. deacon’s prayer day, deacon and spouse dinner, etc.
Mission Statement
The mission of the deacon body at Gambrell Street Baptist Church is to provide ministry to the church and its membership.
Qualifications
Every deacon shall meet the scriptural qualifications set forth in 1 Timothy 3:8-13 and shall be at least 21 years of age and have been a member of Gambrell Street Baptist Church for at least one year. Both adult male and female members of the church shall be given consideration for nomination by the church membership to serve as deacons of the church. This nomination process starts in September or October.
